THE FEAR Pastel on canvas, c.1839-1846, 67 x 57 cm. On the back, the take out cardboard revealed: - The stamp of "DURAND-RUEL rue des Petits Champs 103 in PARIS". - A drawing in blue ink. - Inscriptions in brown ink "20 J-M 5". Jean Marie Fortuné Durand (1800-1865) and his wife Marie Ferdinande Ruel (1795-1870) ran a store at rue des Petits Champs 103 in Paris from 1839 to 1846, specializing in avant-garde painting, including Delacroix, Géricault and Corot plus the supply of material to artists. In 1867, their son Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) opened his gallery at 16 rue Laffitte, which remained until the First World War one of the centers of the art market. Jean Marie Fortuné Durand (1800-1865) et son épouse Marie Ferdinande Ruel (1795-1870) tenait un magasin au rue des Petits Champs 103 à Paris de 1839 à 1846, spécialisé dans la peinture d'avant-garde, dont Delacroix, Géricault et Corot plus la fourniture de matériel aux artistes. En 1867, leur fils Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) ouvrit sa galerie au 16 rue Laffitte, qui restera jusqu'à la Première Guerre mondiale l’un des centres du marché de l'art.
