"My father refused to sell his works to brokers and preferred to give them to art lovers, most of whom were not rich. Samia-Madeleine Verschaffelt Édouard Verschaffelt was deeply in love with the Algerian people and their customs. He married Fatima Brahmia and settled in his village of Bou Saada and never left the Algerian south, where he met Etienne Dinet. Unlike other orientalist painters, he did not fall into the trap of commercial orientalism. Like his friend Dinet, he left works deeply rooted in the splendors and miseries of everyday life.
