Jean HUGO (1894-1984) - Lot 110
Jean HUGO (1894-1984) Pen and black ink drawing from 1923, very beautiful and moving drawing for its page of history, dimensions at sight: 9 x 12 cm (17.5 x 20.5 cm with its frame) described, located, dated and signed on the back by Jean HUGO: "I made this sketch in Pigueÿ, in August 1923. We see, on the balcony of the Chantecler hotel, in the foreground, Valentine HUGO (1887-1968) reading a book; further away, Raymond RADIGUET (1903-1923) from behind, dictating the Bal du Comte d'Orgel to Georges AURIC (1899-1983), who types it on a typewriter; in the background, the Arcachon basin." Jean HUGO 29-XII-1981. "The Hugos arrived yesterday. Auric plays the piano on a typewriter. Radiguet dictates his novel to him (Le Bal du Comte d'Orgel)." Extract from a letter from Jean COCTEAU to Paul MORAND dated July 27, 1923 and located in Le Pigueÿ (Gironde) “It was during our “vacation” at Le Piquey that I, with what joy on the contrary, “typed” the Count of Orgel’s Ball. I was not a virtuoso on the typewriter, to tell the truth a detestable typist. Through my fault, our work often became of a length which risked appearing hopeless. I dare not imagine what Radiguet could legitimately think of it. As for me, I rejoiced at the end of each page, just waiting to start the next one." Georges Auric “When I was there” Ed. Grasset - 1979, p. 147. Raymond RADIGUET will die of Typhoid fever, three months after Jean HUGO's drawing, he was 20 years old. Provenance: Ornella VOLTA (1927-1920) author of nine books and countless articles on Érik SATIE, she created the Érik SATIE Foundation in 1981.
