Tapis Chauves-souris et Nuages - Tibet (Chine) - Lot 145
Tapis Chauves-souris et Nuages - Tibet (Chine) Period of the Chinese emperor GUANGXU (1875-1908). Wool carpet woven and hand-knotted in Tibet, beautiful decoration of bats flying on a black background simulating night but surrounded by multicoloured clouds, dimensions: 100 x 90 cm. Good condition (needs cleaning). For the Chinese, the bat, with its longevity of up to 40 years, is a symbol of happiness, longevity and prosperity. The lotus flower is sacred to Buddhists. It represents purity of mind and body, the spiritual awakening of rising above life's obstacles and adversities. Clouds are sacred to Tibetan Buddhists, and to the Chinese they symbolise cosmic life, protecting the emperor who is considered the son of heaven. Provenance: Sandro Volta Collection (1900-1986) and descendants. Sandro Volta was a writer, journalist and art collector. He wrote the preface to the "Manifesto of Dadaism" by his friend Tristan Tzara. Part of his collection was sold by Maître Rheims at Hôtel Drouot on 16 and 17 May 1957. He was a correspondent for the newspaper LA STAMPA from 1925 to 1932 in China, Tibet and Vietnam. The lots are delivered free of charge in Paris (rue Drouot), Lyon or Marseille a few days after the sale or are sent at the buyer's expense by the carrier of his choice.
