Tapis Kirtimukha - Tibet (Chine) - Lot 180
Tapis Kirtimukha - Tibet (Chine) Period of the Chinese emperor GUANGXU (1875-1908). Wool carpet woven and hand-knotted in Tibet, size : 80 x 50 cm. Good condition for its age. The Kirtimukha is often used as a decorative motif surmounting a door, window or niche in a temple. Its ferocious monster face with huge fangs and open mouth, generally without a lower jaw, is common in the iconography of temples in India and South-East Asia. This carpet of the nomadic peoples of Tibet and China, known as a temple carpet, is a sacred space for meditation. Placed between the saddle and the nomad's horse, it also served to soften the weight of the saddle and protect the horse from the cold. Provenance: Sandro VOLTA Collection (1900-1986) and descendants. Sandro Volta was a writer, journalist and art collector. He wrote the preface to the "Manifesto of Dadaism" by his friend Tristan Tzara. Part of his collection was sold by Maître Rheims at Hôtel Drouot on 16 and 17 May 1957. He was a correspondent for the newspaper LA STAMPA from 1925 to 1932 in China, Tibet and Vietnam. The lots are delivered free of charge in Paris (rue Drouot), Lyon or Marseille a few days after the sale or are sent at the buyer's expense by the carrier of his choice.
