Adam TOEPFFER (1766-1847) - Lot 141
Adam TOEPFFER (1766-1847) "The Polichinelle Show" Oil on panel, 15.8 x 20.9 cm (with frame 23.5 x 28 cm), monogrammed lower right "A.T". Swiss painter. After an apprenticeship as an engraver, the Société des Arts offered him an internship in Paris, which introduced him to the Académie and artistic circles. Back in June 1789, the revolution in Geneva left Töpffer without work. He painted a few portraits and caricatures (watercolors) and began to paint on location. From the beginning of the 19th century, his genre paintings were successful, especially abroad. The Empress Mother Maria Fedorovna and the former Empress Josephine bought paintings from him; he won a gold medal at the Louvre exhibition in 1812, which brought him great success in France. He is the father of Rodolphe Toepffer, whose works are in numerous museums.
