NGUYEN VAN RO (1921–1997) - Lot 135
NGUYEN VAN RO (1921–1997) “Rice Transplanting in Vietnam” Red and gold lacquered wooden panel with eggshell inlays, 21 x 31 cm (viewing area) (41 x 51 cm with frame), signed lower right. Provenance: Acquired by Mr. Gilbert BOUVERET, Director of the Banque d’Indochine from 1950 to 1958. This work by the Vietnamese artist Nguyen Van Ro demonstrates his mastery of lacquer, with gold leaf applied in swirling patterns on the water surrounding these women as they transplant rice plant by plant. Like those harvesting it amid the movement of the golden stalks. The eggshells placed on the women’s hats and bodies illuminate the work. He was a professor at the Gia Dinh School of Fine Arts—Lacquer Department.
