Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887-1938) "Chow" Pastel, red chalk and - Lot 75
Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887-1938) "Chow" Pastel, red chalk and charcoal, 71 x 51 cm (with frame 90 x 70 cm) signed, located and dated 1932. This exceptional, large-scale work, painted during the Yellow Cruise, has remained with the famous German Opel industrial family ever since its creation. In 1928, André Citroën and Georges-Marie Haardt planned a raid to open up the famous Silk Road, 13,000 kilometers from Beirut to Peking, to automobile traffic. As with the Black Cruise of 1924, Alexandre Iacovleff was associated with this great human adventure, as official painter. The group left Beirut on April 4, 1931 and arrived in Peking on February 12, 1932. Iacovleff painted the portrait of this young Chinese woman, who mentioned his first and last names and also signed it in Chinese characters, during the two weeks Iacovleff spent in Peking when the Yellow Cruise arrived.
